The installation includes six exhibits, at first sight looking trivial, each object incorporates a very unique ability. Each is accompanied with a little story, all completely concealing the existence of technical components such as speakers or sensors, only small connection ports as well as the uniform black finishing point to thier unusual abilities. Watch video below for demo.

In form and functionalty all these exhibits pursue John Maeda’s „Simplicity“. They are enjoying to use, they are surprising and one wants to explore and investigate them.

This is a project by Georg Reil and Kathy Scheuring, January 2010 at the University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt.

Voyage en ballon dans l’espace
Alors que l’aventurier Jean-Louis Etienne a décollé lundi matin pour effectuer la première traversée en solitaire du pôle Nord en dirigeable, un autre exploit que l’on qualifiera de “gonflé”, vient d’être réalisé. Un Britannique, Robert Harrison, est en effet parvenu à prendre des clichés de la planète Terre à plus de 35 km d’altitude grâce à un petit ballon météo, un simple appareil photo attaché dessus et un GPS. Les clichés de ce projet amateur intitulé “Icarus” sont expliqués sur son site officiel – à voir également ce reportage vidéo sur YouTube. Les vues sont tellement impressionnantes que l’amateur, âgé de 38 ans, a été contacté par des experts de la NASA. En effet, l’expérience, qui n’a nécessité qu’un budget de 550 euros, aurait coûté pour la NASA plusieurs millions d’euros. Encouragé par ces images, Robert Harrison travaille sur un nouveau ballon capable d’emporter un appareil photo doté d’une lentille rotative ainsi que des instruments permettant en outre de mesurer la pression atmosphérique dans l’espace.

Cela fait un petit moment que je voit passer sur le net, une nouvelle génération de robots qui se déplace aléatoirement et fonctionnant sur le principe du vibreur. Mais je n’avais jamais vraiment traité ce sujet bien qu’il soit très simple à réaliser à la maison, bref un projet idéal pour réaliser avec ses enfants le week-end.

Ce projet ne nécessite pas grand chose en fait :

Un brosse à dent
Un vibreur de téléphone portable
Une pile bouton
Un bout de scotch double face
Peut être un peut de fil de cuivre qu’il faudra souder si le moteur du vibreur n’en dispose pas.

DIY Light Transmitting Concrete (+ HD Video)
I’m going to show you (as best as I can) how to make light transmitting concrete. Google it, and you will be amazed at how beautiful it is! I was desperate to get my hands on some…but considering the cost, I decided to make some with stuff I already had around.

This material has the strange effect of looking shiny or sparkly…but it’s dull concrete at the same time! It’s very entertaining to show off or play around with.

Flyfire, a project initiated by the SENSEable City Laboratory in collaboration with ARES Lab (Aerospace Robotics and Embedded Systems Laboratory) aims to transform any ordinary space into a highly immersive and interactive display environment.

In its first implementation, the Flyfire project sets out to explore the capabilities of this display system by using a large number of self-organizing micro helicopters. Each helicopter contains small LEDs and acts as a smart pixel. Through precisely controlled movements, the helicopters perform elaborate and synchronized motions and form an elastic display surface for any desired scenario.

With the self-stabilizing and precise controlling technology from the ARES Lab, the motion of the pixels is adaptable in real time. The Flyfire canvas can transform itself from one shape to another or morph a two-dimensional photographic image into an articulated shape. The pixels are physically engaged in transitioning images from one state to another, which allows the Flyfire canvas to demonstrate a spatially animated viewing experience.

Flyfire serves as an initial step to explore and imagine the possibilities of this free-form display: a swarm of pixels in a space.
